Lo Ying Shek Chi Wai Foundation Meritorious Research Award

Congratulations to Dr Sunny WONG Hei from the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics on receiving the “Lo Ying Shek Chi Wai Foundation Meritorious Research Award” and being conferred as the Lo Ying Shek Chi Wai Foundation Scholar.

Dr Wong led a translational study which demonstrated the feasibility of detecting certain bacteria in blood to predict colorectal cancer in patients. He observed significant associations with some bacteria, such as Streptococcus gallolyticus and some Peptostreptococcus species, which entered the bloodstream from perturbed colorectal epithelium.

These findings provide scientific insight into how certain bacteria can promote cancer formation, and clinically it alerts doctors to examine the colon for patients presenting with unusual bloodstream infection. This study has been published in world-renowned medical journal of Gastroenterology.

Lo Ying Shek Chi Wai Foundation Meritorious Research Award was established in 2018 with an aim of recognizing selected young clinician scientists who have achieved excellence in medical research output with publications in top tier reputable medical journals.
